Discussion Topic: A prognosis for a patient gives an estimation of their life expectancy.

Many physicians do not like to give a prognosis statistics to patients because prognostic indicators do not take into account many factors that affect a patient’s outcome.  A patient’s mental attitude, overall health, family support, spiritual beliefs, and even closeness to pets greatly affect the outcome.

For this discussion, please further explore those aspects surrounding a patient that may affect their prognosis, either positively or negatively.  Chose at least one, and explain things you could suggest a patient do to increase their possibility of a positive outcome.  For example, in clinics, we often put nature scenes on the ceiling so that when patients receive treatment they experience a little of the calming effects that nature and photography invoke.

For the twelfth Discussion in our course, please answer the following:

Hospice Care is the largest provider of care for palliative patients in our country.  Some of our patients are in hospice while under our care.  Unlike most of healthcare in this country, in hospice care, the patient and loved ones are all treated like “the patient”.  For this week’s discussion, you need to review information on https://www.nhpco.org/about/hospice-care (the website for hospice) to gain background information on hospice.  Then using your knowledge of ethics and hospice, please answer questions to the following scenario:

“Members of a hospice team presented a case of a Muslim patient, whose family was keeping him from knowledge of his terminal status. The patient was asking, “why am I getting weaker and no one is telling me anything?” The case involved the ethical principles of the autonomy of the family and the veracity of the hospice team. The family asked hospice staff not to let him know that he was dying. The team was informed that the family wanted their father to ask for the forgiveness of God before he knows that he is dying. According to their understanding of Muslim teaching a person can only be forgiven if one seeks forgiveness before knowing about the imminence of death.”
